MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A fire is now under control in Mount Vernon after destroying several businesses and spreading to apartments overnight.

Smoke is still billowing from the buildings on Gramatan Avenue as firefighters continue to put out hot spots.

The blast broke out at some point around 1 a.m. Monday. Fire authorities trust it began in the cellar of Sal's Deli and rapidly spread to a Laundromat, a pizza shop and a laundry, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.

"We have a determined flame with different roofs in the store fronts and that fire traversed the rooftop," said Mount Vernon Fire Chief Tom Duffy.

The flame boss said three stories of condo over the organizations caved in inside of an hour of teams touching base on scene, Burrell reported. Inhabitants had the capacity clear and there are no reports of any wounds.

Classes have likewise been crossed out for the day at close-by Mandela High School in light of the fact that power has been sliced off to the zone.
