This is for the wine lovers across the world. We have got some uniquely weird wine brands that would make anyone to think before they have their regular glass.


1. Snake Bile Wine (Ruou Mat Ran)Very popular and found in Vietnam, this wine is prepared in two ways. First method is putting a venomous snake in the rice wine and leave until it is completely brewed and the bile of snake comes out during natural fermentation that takes place in the wine casket. Another way of preparation is to introduce bile which is greenish in color. This bile is extracted from the gallbladder of freshly sliced cobra to the rice wine and allow it to ferment for years.

2. Birch Sap Wine – Found and produced in Sweden, it’s a recipe that goes back to 1785. An inch oh hole is drilled in the trunk of the birch tree and the sap starts to come out. This is the first step, to collect the birch tree sap, in order to begin with the long process for the production of Birch Sap Wine. This wine is very common in Europe wherever Silver Birch trees are found in abundance.

3. The Lizard Wine (Hejie Jiu)Found in the highlands of China and more than its alcohol strength it is popular and well known for its medicinal value as it is strongly believed in the region that drinking this wine regularly can cure some of the notorious diseases like ulcers, arthritis and others. Though this belief and lore is very questionable. Preparation is a very simple one where the lizards which in China are traditionally called as geckos are allowed to ferment in rice wine or whisky for the period of one year.

4. Retsina – Retsina wine is fermented for as long as 2000 years. Wine is also known as tears of nymph’s woods. Its history can be traced to the invasion by Romans in Greece. During the invasion, to show the strength and unity against Romans, resin from a tree was added in wine by the Greeks which led to the formation of Retsina wine that many across the world drink today. Addition of the tree resin adds a piney taste to the Retsina wine.

5. Rose Petal WineThis luxurious wine is commissioned by National rose Society of Great Britain. Made by pouring hot boiling water on the handpicked rose petals and leaving it for days and then strain the extract which is then added with lemon juice, sugar and yeast which is then left for fermentation for years till the fermentation is ceased. It was first made by Britain’s Lurgashall Winery and the wine is considered as the most sought after all across the globe for its smooth fragrance and flavor that it gets from rose petals.


6. Pumpkin Wine Commonly in found in Americas North Dakota region. The brewery company, called as Maple River Winery, produces this wine on a large scale. Made from the fermentation of locally produced pumpkins and adding them to regular rice wine casket. It gets its unusual cloudy white texture from the dissolving property of pumpkins. This wine is semi sweet in taste and widely used during the fall and winters at parties or social gatherings in chilly weather. It can be served chilled or warm with a slice of lemon that adds to its exotic taste.

7. Chocolate Orange Wine – This unique wine is prepared by adding six rich chocolates selected from four countries and to the regular rice wine along with orange juice which is then allowed to ferment and brew for few years. Wine contains only 10% of alcohol unlike other wines with high alcoholic content. Wine is void of any artificial colors or flavorings. More than drinking, this is more used for using as a texture flavoring to fruit salads, cakes and other confectionaries and ice creams.
