Phosphorous: Phosphorous is an essential mineral element in the bone metabolism and besides being intimately related to calcium ions in the formation of bones and teeth, phosphorous always plays some other important roles in the body.
Functions of phosphorous in the body:
·         It helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates and fat by the process of phosphorylation.
·         Normal plasma concentration of phosphorous is about 2-4 mg/dl.
Iron: Iron deficiency is s common finding in the protein energy malnutrition and it occurs due to the following causes:
·         Chronic blood loss due to worm infestations
·         Decreased absorption of iron
·         Increased hepatic sequestration of iron.
Absorption of Iron: Iron is absorbed as ferric or ferrous salts from the upper part of duodenum.
Magnesium: Magnesium helps in the phosphorilation process and it acts as a cofactor in certain enzymatic activity especially for phosphates and carboxylase  enzyme, etc. Magnesium deficiency is seen in protein energy malnutrition and it may also occur due to severe loss of this mineral through vomiting and diarrhea, etc.
Deficiency of magnesium causes :
·         CNS depression
·         Anorexia
·         Vomiting
·         Nausea and there are specific oral lesions reported in magnesium deficiency
Zinc: Zinc deficiency in humans leads to delayed wound healing ,retarded bone growth and defective keratinization .Deficiency of zinc occurs due to chronic intake of poor quality protein especially the vegetable proteins .According to the recent investigative reports ,zinc prevents the oxidative biomembrane damage (free radical injury) of the body tissues and it has been found that increased iron concentration and decreased zinc concentration in the body increases the possibility of cancer or pre-cancer conditions.
Deficiency of these vital minerals may cause a lot of problems like premature loss of primary teeth in young children, inadequate mineralization of the long bones. So the proper intakes of the food with all these essential minerals are extremely important for the proper functioning of the body. And it is suggested by many physicians across the globe in order to have the proper body metabolism an individual must consume a food which contains all these vital mineral elements. And deficiency of these minerals can sometimes be lethal.
